Michelin aero tyres get award from US military
ERJ staff report (TB)
Arlington, Virginia -- Michelin Aircraft Tire Co. recently was honored by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for its supply of military tyres to all of the US Armed Forces.
DLA's magazine named Michelin the winner of its “Performance-based Logistics Implementation of the Year†award competition. The annual award recognises and promotes the logisticians in the US Department of Defense and the defense industry that have made a significant contribution to military logistics.
“This award is the result of a true team effort,†said Brett Carnes, the director of military sales for the Michelin Aircraft Tire Co. “And for each member of the team, including those on the Michelin supply chain team, our partners at Lockheed Martin as well as our suppliers, it is an honor to serve our military in this way.â€
The Defense Logistics award is the fifth such award in 16 months recognising Michelin's logistics service to the DLA. Since September 2008, Michelin said the Defense Supply Center Columbus has awarded the Greenville, South Carolina-based tyre maker four Best Value Awards for exemplary logistics performance in supplying aircraft and ground tyres to all four branches of the US military.
Out of more than 7,000 military parts suppliers in 2009, Michelin was among only 83 companies recognised for meeting performance requirements in the Automated Best Value System.
As a result of the Tire Privatisation Initiative of 2005, Michelin was awarded two competitively bid contracts to procure, store and distribute tyres to the US military. Under the terms of these contracts, Michelin supplies tyres for various types of ground vehicles as well as specific aircraft tyres used in military service. In order to maintain the military's tyre industrial base, Michelin said it sources the majority of these tyres from other tyre manufacturers.
