EPO data shows rising role of industry as applications exceed 600
Oswiecim, Poland – Synthos has announced that it ranked first among Polish entities for patent filings at the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2025, highlighting the growing role of private companies in the country’s innovation landscape.
Citing the EPO Technology Dashboard 2025, Synthos said Polish innovators filed 621 applications last year, down 10.3% from 2024, but 58% higher than in 2016.
Poland ranked 12th among EU countries in terms of filings, said Synthos 25 March.
The data shows private sector activity becoming “increasingly visible,” as opposed to universities and public research institutions which have long dominated the patent landscape.
Synthos’ filings focus on technologies related to rubber and insulation materials, supporting industrial applications and sustainability.
“Taking first place among all Polish entities is one of the indicators of the changes taking place in the Polish innovation system,” said Piotr Cywinski, IP expert at Synthos.
He added that while patenting was historically led by academia, “private companies… are increasingly discovering their role” through research that leads to new inventions.
At the European level, more than 200,000 patent applications were filed in 2025, underlining the continued “attractiveness of the region for innovation.”
The EPO Technology Dashboard, formerly known as the Patent Index, tracks global innovation trends and serves as a barometer of technological progress, R&D investment and competitiveness.
