ECHA studying rubber additives for REACH authorisation
European agency seeks input on four substances, including two used in rubber compounds
Helsinki, 2 Feb 2026 – The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has opened a consultation on a draft recommendation to add four substances to the REACH Authorisation List, including two additives used in rubber articles.
The agency is inviting comments until 2 May on the proposed inclusion of bumetrizole (UV-326) and 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol (UV-329), both ultraviolet absorbers used as additives in plastics and rubber products, as well as in coatings, adhesives and sealants.
According to ECHA, both UV-326 and UV-329 are classified as “very persistent and very bioaccumulative” (vPvB) substances.
ECHA is also considering triphenyl phosphate, cited for its endocrine-disrupting properties, and 2-(dimethylamino)-2-[(4-methylphenyl)methyl]-1-[4-(morpholin-4-yl)phenyl]butan-1-one, which is classified as toxic for reproduction.
These substances are primarily used as additives in plastics, coatings, adhesives, sealants, inks and toners.
According to ECHA, once a substance is added to the REACH Authorisation List, companies must obtain authorisation to continue using it after a defined sunset date.
ECHA said it is seeking further information on current uses and volumes, possible exemptions from authorisation, and the structure and complexity of supply chains.
