Hydrotalcite-like additive can ‘significantly enhance’ resistance properties of chloroprene, epichlorohydrin rubbers
Veendam, Netherlands – Kisuma Chemicals, a supplier of magnesium-based additives, has presented its hydrotalcite-like DHT-4 additive as a potential contributor to developing alternatives to fluorine rubbers (FKM).
In an 8 Sept statement, Kisuma cited new test data showing that the additive could “significantly enhance” the heat, fluid, and ageing resistance of chloroprene (CR) and epichlorohydrin (ECO) rubbers.
Acting as an acid scavenger and boosting both the mechanical and chemical resistance of rubber compounds, the additive offers manufacturers a route to partially replace FKM.
This, Kisuma noted, is of significance as the EU moves to restrict the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
“With DHT-4, we are helping compounders and OEMs move towards high-performance, PFAS-free elastomer solutions without compromising quality,” said Claudia Aguilar Carvalho, technical sales manager Europe for Kisuma.
The dual function as a protective and performance-enhancing additive enables multiple rubber matrices, according to Carvalho.
This, she explained, helps bridge the performance gap to FKM, offering “an efficient, future-ready solution at low dosage levels.”
The additive is especially aimed at European and North American rubber compounders, OEMs, tier suppliers, and gasket, sealing and hose manufacturers operating in automotive, industrial, and fluid-handling sectors impacted by REACH and other PFAS regulations.
The company will be exhibiting the product at K 2025 rubber & plastics show in Dusseldorf, Germany, to be held 8-15 Oct.
