EU-backed initiative targets use of recycled rubber waste in vehicle components
Sanok, Poland – Sanok Rubber Company has recently received an EU grant for a project* to develop more sustainable automotive sealing products.
The project is focused on the development of ‘innovative rubber compounds based on devulcanised waste for use in body sealing systems for the automotive industry’.
The goal is to develop and implement an innovative EPDM rubber compound containing at least 15% devulcanised material, said Sanok Rubber.
The materials will maintain “the highest quality standards and compliance with automotive industry norms,” added a company release.
The devulcanised material, it noted, will be produced in-house by Sanok from waste generated during the production of body sealing systems.
The total project value is listed at around PLN38 million (€9 million), with EU contributing funding of PLN14 million.
According to Sanok, a company-owned building will be adapted to provide a production and storage hall with full technical and social facilities.
A pilot line for grinding, separating, and devulcanising waste will be installed, and production of the new EPDM compounds with devulcanised material will be launched.
Ultimately, Sanok aims to introduce next-generation body sealing systems with “a sustainable chemical composition that meets the highest standards of the automotive industry.”
*The project is being supported under the EU FENG.01.01 SMART Path initiative.
