French tire maker signs open letter to G20 leaders urging for climate support
Clermont-Ferrand, France – Michelin has signed onto the “business ambition for 1.5 °C” by joining “race to zero,” a global campaign to rally companies in support of the Paris Agreement climate goals.
The movement is spearheaded by several organisations, including the international consortium Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the United Nations Global Compact, and We Mean Business.
In a 27 Oct statement, Michelin said it was boosting its commitment to climate change by joining the campaign and signing an open letter to G20 leaders, who met at the end of October in Rome.
The open letter, by ‘We Mean Business’ coalition, urged the political leaders to make the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C attainable.
The letter called for increasing nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by bringing them into line with a target of a 50% decrease in global emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.
Furthermore, it urged the leaders to financially support efforts to cut emissions, and accelerate the energy transition.
The French group also said that its 2030 CO2 reduction targets, unveiled in April, are compatible with the “business ambition for 1.5 °C” commitment.
Michelin said it will be submit the targets to the science based targets initiative (SBTi) consortium for approval in 2022.
As part of its sustainability drive, Michelin aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all of its production sites and logistics operations and throughout its supply chain with its raw materials and components suppliers.
