Paris – Tire manufacturer Michelin is seriously considering a return to Formula One car racing for the 2014 season, reports Le Figaro. This might be as sole tire supplier or alongside a competitor, said the group’s competition director Pascal Couasnon in an interview.
Couasnon expressed a preference for larger (18in) tires – the current F1 regulations specify 13 inch wheelrims.
Michelin has laid down “certain conditions” to the sport’s governing body, the FIA.
Pirelli, the incumbent tire supplier, claims to have agreements in place for 2014 with ten of the eleven racing teams. Each currently pays around €2m per year to be equipped with Pirelli tires.
Couasnon dismissed stories that he had already met F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone for negotiations, commenting: “Formula One is a world where there are many rumours”.
