Two dead after mixer explodes at MarconiGomma -- reports

Bologna, Italy -- Two people have died and three are injured after a mixer exploded at MarconiGomma, according to multiple local press reports. MarconiGomma could not be reached for comment. Local newspapers said Fabio Costanzi, sales and technical director at the company and a 45-year-old Indian worker, Iadav Ramjaz were close to the mixer when it exploded and were declared dead.
Three other workers were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, but were later released, while a further six employees were treated on site.
MarconiGomma operates four mixing lines at its factory in Sasso Marconi, near Bologna. The company employs a total of 55 people and serves customers in Italy and elsewhere with compounds based on speciality elastomers, including HNBR, FKM, butyl and chlorosulphonated rubbers.
Phone lines at MarconiGomma were constantly engaged, while the company did not respond to emails prior to publication of this report.
Newspaper reports said the local fire service managed to extinguish the blaze which followed the explosion at the factory. It is not clear how much damage has been caused.
