SSL condom sales up 5.5% in Q1

London, UK - SSL International plc, manufacturer of the Durex brand latex condom product range, has outperformed company targets and recorded a 5.5 percent rise in condom sales to £223.6 million (Euro 253 million) in the first quarter of 2009 (Q1), the company said recently.
The company said it has seen strong growth in core territories such as the UK and Eastern Europe, along with robust sales and excellent results from businesses in China and Russia in Q1. Sales of the overall Durex brand rose by 7.3 percent to £266.9 million in Q1.
Company sales increased by 20.3 percent to £642.4 million, profit was up to £389.1 million from £320.2 million in Q1 2008 and operating profit was up 31.4 percent to £89.5 million.
“We have again outperformed against our targets notwithstanding the challenge of the difficult consumer environment,†said chief executive Garry Watts. “By driving our core brands, Durex and Scholl, through the introduction of innovative products and effective marketing, we believe we are well placed to continue to exploit opportunities in all of our markets,†Watts concluded.
