Nynas opens development-scale reactor
ERJ staff report (DS)
Nynäshamn, Sweden -- Specialty oils company Nynas has officially opened a new R&D facility in Sweden. This is, essentially, a smaller version of Nynas' full-scale hydrogenation facility. it is part of a 28 million SEK (euro 2.7 million) investment in new research and development facilities at the company's refinery in Nynäshamn. This investment is part of the company's on-going expansion in the world market for specialty oils.
The new facility will support Nynas' research and development work. Nynas said it can now test new products, develop existing products and also produce plans for an enlargement of the hydrogenation facilities at the refinery. Nynas will also use the facility to evaluate new crude oils and catalysts for future use in the refinery process.
The various parts of the new facility have been designed using state-of-the-art technology and have also been adapted to Nynas' specific requirements. To give one example: it is now possible to use crude oil with extremely high viscosity, which has strategic importance as the demand for high-viscosity products is increasing in the global market. These products include heavy process oils, which are used as a softening agent in rubber manufacturing - in the tyre industry, for example - and heavy base oils, which are used in the manufacture of industrial lubricants.
