Cadiz Township, Ohio -- The owner of an abandoned landfill in Ohio is being ordered to remove about 6,250 scrap tyres, the state Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said.
Martin Landfill Corp. or its corporate owners are being directed to take the action at the site in Cadiz Township, Harrison County.
The site has been ordered to stop accepting solid waste and tyres; implement mosquito control measures; and establish proper storage piles of tyres and fire breaks between piles until they can be removed, the state said.
Landfill Resources Inc. (LRI) is listed as current owners of the site as former property owners Jack and Ethel Martin transferred the property to LRI, the state said. LRI later merged with Martin Landfill Corp., which operated the site until 1991, when the state ordered it to properly close.
The tyres must be removed by mid-August, the Ohio EPA said.
