Apollo declares lockout at Perambra plant
ERJ staff report (DS)
Kerala, India -- Apollo Tyres Ltd has informed Bombay Stock Exchange that the management has declared a lock-out at the company's manufacturing facility at Perambra (Kerala). The lockout took effect from the early morning of Friday 11 June. The company said the action was taken on account of labour unrest relating to long term settlement negotiations.
Local press reports said the plant has a history of labour disputes. In April, Apollo told the BSE that, "workers at the company's manufacturing plant at Perambra (Kerala) have resorted to go slow resulting in considerable drop in the production. The workers have resorted to go slow as a pressure tactics for bargaining long term settlement." At the time, Apollo said it hoped to resolve the matter in a reasonable period of time.
The Perambra facility has been in operation since 1977 and makes truck, light truck and agricultural tyres, all in cross-ply constructions. The plant has nominal capacity for up to 300 tonnes/day of tyres daily, but local press reports suggest that output has fallen to around 100 tonnes/day.
