First tyre recycling centre opens in Chile
ERJ staff report (DS)
Santiago, Chile -- Chile's first tyre recycling unit, Polambiente, has opened for business just outside the capital, Santiago.
The unit uses Italian equipment to grind up tyres and the granulate is used as an ingredient for playgrounds and suchlike.
Polambiente said Chile generates 3 million end of life tyres each year. Currently, most go to illegal landfill and unauthorised dumps. The country has established the Cámara Chilena de la Industria de neumáticos de Chile A.G†(Chilean Tires industry Chamber U.G.) to manage the logistics and disposal of tyres. CTIC comprises the four main companies that manufacture, import and sell tires in the country: Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin and Pirelli.
Poliambiente was created in 2009 by “Inmobiliaria, Inversions y Servicios Pola Ltda.†(Real State, Investment and Services Pola) to study and develop methods of tyre disposal with the cooperation of the “Cámara Chilena de la Industria de neumáticos de Chile A.G†(Chilean Tires industry Chamber U.G.)
The company said it is the first tyre disposal plant in Chile.
Polambiente's plant occupies an area of 10 000 m2
