India used more rubber in 2009 than US - reports
ERJ staff report (DS)
Mumbai - India claims it was the second consumer of natural rubber in the world, after China, and ahead of the US in 2009.
Data for 2009 released by India's Rubber Board says China consumed 3.46 million tonnes of NR, followed by India (905 000 tonnes) and the US (687 000 tonnes).
These figures contrast strongly with 2008 consumption which showed China at 2.94 million tonnes; the US at 1.04 million tonnes and India at 881 000 tonnes.
Overall, said the Rubber Board, global NR consumption fell to 9.39 million tonnes in 2009 compared with 10.17 million tonnes in 2008. The group said Indian rubber consumption would increase in 2010 to 978 000 tonnes.
The Rubber Board suggested that the increase in India was due to increased production of truck and bus tyres.
