ETRMA publishes annual report
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels -- The ETRMA (European Tyre and Rubber Manufactures' Association) has published its annual report for 2009-2010.
The report reviews ETRMA's activities over the last year, highlighting especially the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals) legislation and how rubber processing companies should respond, including a series of documents and guidance notes which may be downloaded from the ETRMA website.
The other key area of activity over the last year has the been the legislatino covering tyres on European roads. Although much of this regulation is not due to come into force until 2012 or beyond, the process of bringing the new regualtions to the statute book has been very time-consuming for the industry.
In particular, Francesco Gori, president of ETRMA said, "“Tyre safety and environmental performance requirements are set at unprecedented levels; the implementation of the law will be challenging, but the tyre industry is ready to meet the challenge in light of the consumers and citizens interest.â€
The group issued a note of caution, however, with secretary-general, Fazilet Cinaralp saying, "“As long as the authorities have no way of checking or imposing sanctions, the whole thing is not as effective as it might sound.â€
An iupdate on the progress of the management of end of life tyres across Europe shows that around 37 percent of tyres in Europe end up as a source of energy in the form of fuel; 39 percent are used as a useful material, such as articificl turf; school playgrounds or tyre bales used in civil engineering, while 19 percent are re-used in the form of retreads or other re-use.
