EC leaves rubber off list of 14 critical commodities
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels - The European Commission yesterday launched a major raw materials initiative, identifying 14 materials critical to the future of the EU. Rubber was not among them. The EC published a 24-page document titled, Tackling the Challenges in Commodity Markets and Raw Materials at a press conference in Brussels yesterday.
The EC said its list of critical raw materials was selected because of the risks of supply shortages and their impact on the economy are thought to be more significant than the materials not on the list. In particular, supply of the materials is dominated by a few countries.
Materials on the list are dominated by metals and rare earths. Alphabetically, they are: Antimony, Beryllium, Cobalt, Fluorspar, Gallium, Germanium, Graphite, Indium, Magnesium, Niobium, metals in the Platinum group, all the rare earth minerals; Tantalum and Tungsten.
