ETRMA renews call for 'level playing field' ahead of vehicle data legislation

Brussels – The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has called on the European Commission to consider a number of key issues to create a level playing field for all automotive stakeholders ahead of the Commision's upcoming in-vehicle data access legislative proposal.

“The tire industry strongly supports a smart, safe, and sustainable mobility ecosystem. However, some conditions must be met,” said ETRMA in a 21 Sept statement.

The conditions, the association said, include ensuring equal access to in-vehicle data, functions and resources for all automotive stakeholders.

Furthermore, the association called on the Commission to ‘clarify’ the definition and remit of digital services as they apply to “native connected vehicles”.

This, it said, will help the tire industry plan its next steps.

ETRMA also called on the Commission to place the users at the heart of future governance of vehicle data access, which it said supported the fundamental principles of separation of duties, data protection and cybersecurity. 

The European Commission is expected to publish a legislative proposal on access to in-vehicle data in the first quarter of 2022. 

ETRMA has welcomed the move, saying the legislation will create fair and secure in-vehicle data access that will enable a level playing field for all automotive stakeholders.
