Washington – US tire manufacturers have made strong progress towards reducing CO2 emissions and the industry’s climate change mitigation goals, according to the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA).
Total CO2 emissions related to tire manufacturing facilities decreased 15% from 2010 to 2019, said president and CEO Anne Forristall Luke during a panel discussion at the World Rubber Summit 2021 on 11 June.
The tire industry, she said , remains “a low-energy industry compared to others.”
Forristall Luke went on to stress that the association’s 13 members are committed to their environmental goals through developing innovative products, operational enhancements and research and development investments.
In addition to offering products with low carbon footprint, Forristall Luke said US tire makers are taking “proactive measures” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing facilities and advancing the circular economy for scrap tires.
Furthermore, she noted that members had stringent natural rubber procurement policies, with a “vast majority” making significant contributions downstream in the value chain.
