Mitas suggests cross-plies for farmyard telehandling
ERJ staff report (BC)
Prague, Czech Republic – As telehandlers have become more sophisticated, agricultural operators are using them for longer hours, requiring specialist tires, Ron Wood, automotive engineering manager of Czech offroad tire specialist Mitas Tyres has suggested in Farmers Guardian.
Wood said: “In construction, cross-ply tires are preferred, due to their stronger, stiffer carcase, which resists sidewall damage when continually placing heavy loads with the boom extended and forks or bucket up high.
“The stiffer carcase increases stability, whereas radials can give some sidewall movement.
“On a standard agricultural tire, 30 per cent of the rubber contacts the ground, while on an industrial pattern it is more like 50 per cent. On any tire it is only the lugs which make contact with the ground, so the wider the lug, the less the wear.”
The most popular size for telehandlers is a 460/70 R24, noted Wood. One option from Mitas is its TI-22 tread, which is a traction pattern, but with wide lugs. Another is the cross-ply 500/70 25 with T05 traction tread, or to give a 50:50 ratio, an industrial tire such as the 405/70 20 MPT 21 can be fitted.
