These pictures appeared in a lengthy newspaper article on 22 Sep 1917 which highlighted the new trend for “coal gas containers” on top of vehicles. One picture shows an Edinburgh bus with “coal gas container” on top while the other one shows a rover car “fitted with gas-holder”.
The containers were made by North British Rubber Co as a result of a growing demand for rubber-proofed “gas-bags”. According to the news report, in order to run a vehicle on petrol one had to obtain a permit and as the permits became more and more difficult to gain, the gas bags became more popular among car owners.
The article continues to say that the production of the gas bags were going through a “standardisation” practice wherein “best fabric and proofing be given them avoiding .. unnecessary margin of strength, and … guarding against the development of defects”.
