Kuala Lumpur -- Production of natural rubber (NR) in June 2008 was 88,449 tonnes, down by 10.2 percent on the figure in June 2007. Compared with May 2008, however, the output represented an increase of 5.6 percent. The smallholding sector contributed 94.9% of total production while the estate sector, the remaining 5.1%. Total production in the first six months of 2008 amounted to 564,991 tonnes, a decrease of 4.3% when compared with the corresponding period in 2007.
Exports of Malaysian NR in June 2008 stood at 74,846 tonnes, an increase of 7.7 percent when compared with the same month of 2007, and when compared with May 2008. Exports of Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) constituted 93.0% of total exports. Of the total SMR exported, SMR 20 accounted the highest, 42.3%.
In June 2008, imports of NR amounted to 42,473 tonnes, a decrease of 9.3 percent compared to that of the same month last year. Imports jumped by 21.4 percent when compared with the previous month. The main type of rubber imported was latex concentrate which accounted for 67.3% of total imports in the reference month.
Domestic consumption of NR in June 2008 was 38 566 tonnes, up by 11.3 percent compared with a year ago, but down by 1.8 percent on the figure from May 2008.
In June 2008, the average monthly price of latex concentrate was 688.74 sen, an increase of 13.0% compared to may 2008 and 41% higher when compared with June 2007.
