Project to supply part of power demand at Medicine Hat carbon black manufacturing site
Medicine Hat, Alberta – Cancarb Ltd has completed and commissioned a solar power facility at its carbon black manufacturing operation in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
The project involved an investment of more than C$7 million (€4.5 million) and includes over 7,000 solar panels with a generation capacity of about 3.5MW, the company said 3 June.
Electricity generated by the installation will supply "a substantial portion" of the site's utility load.
According to Cancarb, the project is "the largest renewable energy investment" within parent group Tokai Carbon Group and is integrated directly with a thermal carbon black manufacturing operation.
The solar facility follows the company's earlier investment in a waste heat recovery system, commissioned more than 25 years ago, which converts recovered heat into electricity.
“This project represents much more than just a solar power installation,” said Cancarb president Peter Donnelly.
“By investing in renewable energy today, we are taking meaningful steps toward reducing emissions while continuing to provide the high-quality products our customers depend on.”
