Tolsa positions itself as ATO-free flame retardant supplier for fire-safe alternatives

Madrid – Spanish chemicals manufacturer Tolsa has positioned itself to supply sustainable flame-retardant alternatives to the rubber industry: offering an additive that is free from both halogens and antimony trioxide (ATO).

Suitable for rubber and plastics applications, the Adins-branded additive is claimed to be a 'safer and more sustainable solution for fire-retardant materials, amid rising raw material prices and tightening supply in Europe.'

According to Tolsa, ATO is facing increased scrutiny due to its classification as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

Furthermore, it said, prices have surged by over 800% in the past year, prompting manufacturers to rethink their formulations.

Tolsa's ATO-free product "improves fire performance due to its synergy effect enhancing the char formation," said Marta Sacristan, functional additives technical manager at Tolsa.

In addition, it reduces the smoke and heat-release while improving the anti-dripping effect, Sacristan further claimed in a 14 May press release.

These attributes, she said, are key features for fire performance, especially in rubber cable insulation, footwear, and protective coatings.

According to Tolsa, rubber compounders are among "major international compounders and producers" that are currently validating its flame-retardancy products. 

In rubber cable applications, Tolsa said Adins has "significantly reduced peak heat release and smoke production while improving the char structure."

Similarly, in safety shoe soles made of rubber, the ATO-free formulation enhances fire resistance through the formation of denser and more compact char.
