Move follows a US imports ban on glove maker's products in October 2021
Kuala Lumpur – Supermax Corp. Berhad has rolled out a new foreign worker management policy and is enhancing its human resources policies in a bid to improve its labour standards.
In a 3 Jan statement, the Malaysian gloves maker said the policies have been effective since November 2021 - a month after an imports ban by the US customs and border protection (CBP) on the company's products for allegations of forced labour.
“Supermax takes its compliance issue seriously and have embarked on its undertakings to meet the international labour organisaiton (ILO) standards since 2019,” said the manufacturer.
The new foreign worker management policy, it added, will speed up the process in meeting the ILO Standards.
As part of the policy, the company said it was making “significant changes” to improve benefits, facilities and living conditions provided to Supermax workers.
These include major refurbishment to hostel facilities that will provide workers with "adequate privacy," and offering ATM and smoking zones.
Due for completion in February, the refurbishment also includes new facilities to improve leisure and lifestyle elements of workers.
Supermax has also raised its minimum wage to RM1,400 (€295) to be applied across all categories, as opposed to the current legal minimum wage of RM1,200.
