VW moves to flex-fuel cars in Brazil
Saõ Paulo, Brazil - Volkswagen will stop making cars that can run only on gasoline for the Brazilian market this year and focus exclusively on vehicles that run on ethanol, gasoline or a mix of the two, Reuters reported last week.
The shift in production is the latest example of how automakers are scrambling to roll out fuel-efficient vehicles to woo consumers worried about surging gasoline prices.
In 2005, VW's Brazilian unit made about 300 000 vehicles equipped with so-called flex-fuel engines. This year it expects to produce about 450 000 of those alternative cars.
