Washington -- The Rubber Manufacturers Association wants to side with the Environmental Protection Agency in a court case that would forbid the use of tyre-derived fuel (TDF) in the US.
The association petitioned the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to file an amicus brief on behalf of the EPA. The Sierra Club, the Louisiana Environmental Action Network and the non-profit environmental law firm Earth Justice filed suit against the EPA last November, seeking to force the agency to treat industrial boilers that burn solid waste for energy recovery as waste incinerators.
The environmental groups claim the change is necessary to prevent dangerous emissions levels of mercury, dioxins, lead and other toxic substances. The RMA, however, said such a change in regulations would make the use of TDF and other solid wastes for energy recovery "a bureaucratic nightmare" and prohibitively expensive.
