Shojiro Ishibashi inducted into Auto Hall of Fame
Dearborn, Michigan -Â The US-based Automotive Hall of Fame has inducted Shojiro Ishibashi, founder of Bridgestone Corp., into its list of honoured contributors to the global automotive industry.
The latest round of seven Inductees was announced yesterday at the New York International Auto Show. Formal induction ceremonies will take place in Dearborn, Michigan, on 3 October 2006.
In the citation, the AHF said, "Shojiro Ishibashi dreamed of supplying his nation's new automobile industry with tires developed and manufactured with Japanese capital and Japanese expertise. Ishibashi created Japan's first locally developed tires in 1930. He established Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd., in 1931 to manufacture and market the new product. Today
Bridgestone/Firestone is one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world.
The Japanese words "ishi bashi" that form his family name translate as "stone bridge" and this was the inspiration for the Bridgestone name.
The founders of the Michelin business, Edouard and Andre Michelin, were inducted in 2002, while John Boyd Dunlop was added to the Hall of Fame in 2005. Neither Frank Sieberling, founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber, nor Charles Goodyear, inventor of the vulcanisation process, has been named to the list.
