Dow Corning says its silicone elastomer is a cosmetic breakthrough
Midland, Michigan - Dow Corning Corp has published a technical paper that suggests a new silicone elastomer can mask wrinkles on human skin, absorb sebum, and "give consumers smooth, youthful-looking skin."
The company says its 9701 Cosmetic Powder grade, "can be used in formulating a wide range of color cosmetic, skin care and sun care products."
The paper says Silicone elastomers for personal care applications were first developed in Japan. The original material was an elastomer powder prepared by cryogenic grinding of cured silicone elastomer. Elastomer pastes composed of silicone elastomers swollen by solvents such as cyclomethicone followed. Today, the spectrum of available silicone elastomers is broad.
Dow Corning's new grade consists of silicone elastomer spheres (dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer) coated with silica. The average particle size of the spheres is from approximately 1 to 10 microns.
