MTI supplies silicone seating cushions to Beijing Metro
Mississaugua, Ontario - MTI Specialty Silicones division in Richmond, Virginia will supply passenger seat cushions to the Beijing Underground in China. Pre-production materials have already commenced for the pre-production series and are expected to be delivered during this quarter. Full production deliveries are expected to begin in 2007.
Silicone foam is one of the few materials that is strongly fire resistant, but has in the past been rejected for use in aircraft because of the relatively high weight penalty, compared with poolyurethane foams.
"We are pleased that our patented MF-1 low density silicone product line continues to gain momentum as the material of choice in world-wide seating projects. The contract with the Beijing Underground and other projects in Asia clearly demonstrate that we are starting to establish a strong footprint in that market," said Bill Neill, MTI Global President and CEO.
"With safety standards increasing throughout the world, our products are growing in demand," Gregg Strangways, MTI's North American and Asian Vice President reported. "In addition to the unique properties and benefits the product offers, we are also providing our customers technical support on flame, smoke, and toxicity improvements."
The project is expected to have a total value of approximately US$250 000 (€200 000). MTI Global was awarded this contract from one of the largest manufacturer of railway seats in China. The materials will be used in a seating program for the Beijing Underground which is scheduled to be completed in time for the Olympics in 2008.
