NHTSA, China sign agreement on motor vehicle safety, enforcement

Washington, DC - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with China's National Development and Reform Commission to cooperate on motor vehicle safety and standards enforcement issues.

Among other things, the agreement calls for information sharing, joint development of standards harmonisation and joint analyses to assist in the development of motor vehicle safety and fuel economy standards.

It's always good that they're talking and looking toward ways to cooperate,” said a spokesman for the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). “Better cooperation between NHTSA and agencies of the Chinese government is a good thing.”

The signing of the document comes in the middle of the recall of 255 000 allegedly defective light truck radial tyres made by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd. in China and imported to the US by Union, New Jersey.-based Foreign Tire Sales Inc.
