Freudenberg develops HNBR seal for wind turbines
ERJ staff report (DS)
Weinheim, Germany -- Freudenberg Simrit has developed a so-called Enviromatic deflector for the main bearing of offshore wind turbines.
This all-new seal is designed in such a way that it effectively keeps salt particles in the air, moisture, rain, and dirt away from the seal by wiping them off. In order to ensure that this protective function is upheld over many years, a deflector with exactly defined contact pressure is needed. The prerequisites for this are a FEM-designed sealing lip contour and a material that meets the requirements of this tough application.
With the help of state-of-the-art finite element method (FEM) analysis, Freudenberg Simrit has come up with a much more rigid sealing lip contour for the Enviromatic deflector, which is a huge improvement on the V-rings that were used in the past.
The elastomer material 75 HNBR U467 was the ideal choice for the job. This sealing material not only has a high mechanical load-bearing capacity and wear resistance, it is also highly resistant to ozone.
