Berne, Switzerland – Anyone driving into Italy this summer could be in for a nasty surprise unless they pay careful attention to rules concerning the use of winter tires in the country, the Automobile Club de Suisse (ACS) has warned.
Vehicles fitted with certain winter and all-season tires might not be legal on Italian roads up from 15 May to 14 October, according to the Berne-based ASC. Drivers who infringe the law could face fines of around €1700 and risk confiscation of their vehicle.
The requirement, which runs from 15 May to 14 October, includes winter tires with speed categories L, M, N, P and Q. However, vehicles fitted with S, T, H et V speed-rated tires are authorised to drive on winter tires in Italy.
