Hanover, Germany - A team of scientists has released details of its research into adaptive tyres at the Hanover Fair. The tyre, says the team can alter its tread pattern geometry according to data from sensors which can read the terrain.
The project is led by Prof. Detlef Riemer of the College of Engineering, Business and Culture in Leipzig (HTWK)
He said the grooves in the tyre are fitted with actuators. This means the geometry of the tread pattern can be changed while the tyre is rolling. This allows it to adapt to heavy rain, or different road surfaces.
A functional tyre is on display at the Fair, though Riemer acknowledged that it is not a finished product. The model of "adaptive tyre" can be found at the Hannover Fair on community stand Research For the Future in Hall 2, stand C 37
