Deal secures feedstock supply and recovered carbon black offtake for tire recycling project
Dillingen, Germany – Pyrum Innovations has signed long-term supply and offtake agreements with Pirelli under the tire maker's European tire-to-tire initiative.
Under the agreements, Pirelli will purchase Pyrum's recovered carbon black (rCB), branded ThermoTireBlack (TTB), for use in its European tire manufacturing operations.
The tire maker will also supply the recycler with end-of-life and scrap tires from defined sources in Germany, said Pyrum in a 24 July statement.
The agreements strengthen Pyrum's long-term access to feedstock while securing an industrial outlet for its rCB, covering "both sides" of the company's business model.
Using its thermolysis technology, Pyrum converts end-of-life tires (ELTs) into rCB and tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), under the brand ThermoTireOil (TTO).
The rCB, Pyrum explained, is upgraded by the company and can partially replace fossil-based carbon black in tire production, while the oil is used as a circular feedstock in the chemical industry.
According to Pyrum, the cooperation provides further industrial validation of its recycling technology and demonstrates that the process can be integrated into an ISCC +-certified European value chain involving tire, chemical and synthetic rubber companies.
"Signing these long-term agreements with Pirelli is an important commercial and strategic milestone for Pyrum," said CEO Pascal Klein.
Pyrum is participating in the broader tire-to-tire initiative launched by Pirelli together with BASF and Synthos, under which secondary raw materials recovered from ELTs are reintroduced into the manufacture of new tires. (ERJ report)
