Milan, Italy – Pirelli has been confirmed among the UN ‘global compact lead’, a sustainability initiative that sees companies advancing their environmental efforts through commitment to the '10 principles' of the programme and promoting sustainability goals.
In a 20 Sept statement, Pirelli said it was the only company of the automobiles & parts sector to be represented among the 37 global leaders.
To qualify as a ‘lead’ within the UN ‘global compact’, a company must take part in at least two “action platforms” which involve companies, local networks, academies, civil society and governments collaborating to resolve sustainability issues.
In addition, participants must communicate their own progress through an annual sustainability report that details the results achieved in terms of implementing the 10 principles.
“For Pirelli, industry means innovation and that means accelerating change for the benefit of all and to safeguard the environment,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera, CEO and executive vice chairman.
The confirmation, he said, was a “recognition of our constant efforts to achieve challenging goals through actions that bring concrete results”.
Lead companies, according to CEO and executive director of UN global compact Sanda Ojiambo, represent "the highest level of engagement with the UN global compact.”
