Norway's Wastefront teams up with US company for tire recovery projects

Houston, Texas –  Norwegian tire recycler Wastefront AS and US sustainable energy project developer Devaltec LLC have entered a partnership to co-execute tire recovery projects over the next five years. 

The two companies have been collaborating since 2019 and the new agreement will see Devaltec acting as "the primary strategic partner" to Wastefront, the Norwegian recycler announced 25 Nov.

Under the agreement, the Houston-based project developer will co-lead the development of all upcoming Wastefront projects for the five-year period. 

"Devaltec is contracted to successfully deliver production from multiple plants of minimum 1000 MTD (tonnes a day), commencing with Wastefront's first waste tire recycling plant in Sunderland in the North East of England, due for completion in 2023," the company said.

"Wastefront's ambition is to become the world leader on tire recycling, building a profitable growth company while at the same time solving a global environmental problem," said Wastefront CEO Inge Berge in a statement.

Devaltec's industrial background and project experience will play a key part in realising Wastefront's potential, he added.

Wastefront plants will use conventional technologies in conjunction with the company's proprietary process to recycle tires. This will "minimise the environmental impact typically associated with traditional tire pyrolysis," the companies said in a statement.

The company is currently developing a waste tire recovery project in Sunderland to produce low carbon maritime and road transportation fuels and recovered carbon black (rCB).

The facility, which will be the Wastefront's first plant, will have an annual capacity of 72,000 tonnes per year with outputs including liquid hydrocarbons and carbon black.
