Automotive supplier backs ElevationSpace developing round-trip space transportation systems
Kiyosu, Japan – Toyoda Gosei is looking to diversify its operations with a recent investment in ElevationSpace Inc., a Tohoku University spin-out developing returnable small satellites based on atmospheric re-entry technology.
ElevationSpace is building “round-trip space transportation systems” designed to support the transport of crew and cargo between space and Earth orbit, and provides end-to-end services from satellite development to operation, said TG 19 June.
The company’s small satellites use heat-resistant materials to withstand atmospheric re-entry, enabling payloads and research results from space to be returned to Earth more frequently.
Toyoda Gosei said the investment reflects its strategy to pursue growth beyond traditional automotive boundaries as the industry “undergoes structural change.”
The Japanese automotive supplier said the space sector was expected to expand in coming years, adding that it is seeking areas where its technologies can be applied.
“We are investing in ElevationSpace to enhance knowledge in this field,” said the group.
