BMW joins sustainable rubber platform
Munich, Germany – German carmaker BMW has joined the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), the company has announced.
The move is a “rather logical approach” considering the amount of rubber used in the automotive industry, according to its statement issued 8 June.
“BMW needs around 24,000 tonnes of rubber a year for tires alone,” said the company, which linked the move to its efforts to combat climate change.
Launched in Singapore in March, GPSNR consists of a broad range of stakeholders from across the natural rubber value-chain, includes many major tire makers.
The platform aims to address issues, such as conditions for rubber farmers, deforestation and land-grabbing and ensure responsible sourcing of natural rubber.
