ETRMA backs move to extend TPMS vehicle categories

Brussels – The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has thrown its weight behind an EU initiative to extend mandatory use of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) to all vehicle categories.

The European Parliament internal market and consumer protection committee on 2 April endorsed a proposed revision of the existing European General Safety Regulations.

Article 5 of the proposed regulation extends the scope of the currently applicable requirement to fit passenger cars with a TPMS to cover all vehicle categories.

TPMS has been mandatory in the EU for passenger cars since 2014, and the inclusion of commercial vehicles “is an important step forward,” said ETRMA secretary general, Fazilet Cinaralp

The move will contribute road safety and help lower vehicle energy-consumption and tire noise, Cinaralp noted in a ETRMA statement about the decision.

TPMS systems, added the secretary general, permit tires to perform “much closer to their optimum in real time” and also extend product-lifespan.
