WindSpace, Enviro announce Danish tire-pyrolysis project

Kongens Lyngby, Denmark / Gothenburg, Sweden – Elysium Nordic is to set up “one of the world’s largest pyrolysis plants” in Denmark to recover carbon black, gas, steel and oil from end-of-life tires (ELTs).

Established by renewable energy group WindSpace A/S, Elysium Nordic will employ patented pyrolysis technology developed by Scandinavian Enviro Systems.

The plant in the port of Nyborg, will be able to recover more than 9,000 tonnes of carbon black from 30,000 tonnes of ELT on start-up in 2021, WindSpace announced 5 Feb.

Much of the 3 million ELTs collected every year across the EU gets “treated as waste instead of the valuable resource they are,” added the Kongens Lyngby-based group.

The Elysium Nordic plant, it claimed, will be “the first important step towards a more circular, sustainable and reasonable approach to handling ELTs.”

In its project announcement, Gothenburg-based Enviro described Elysium Nordic as a “prospective” joint venture between it and WindSpace.

“Construction of a DKK300-million (€40-million) plant could start in 2019 and be completed in 2021 if various commercial aspects have been clarified,” said Enviro.

“We’re planning on taking joint ownership of Elysium Nordic, which will be operating the establishment of the plant,” explained Thomas Sörensson, CEO of Enviro.

The next step in the project “is to package the partnership around financing and ownership matters,” said Sörensson.
