Continental's driverless car to hit Nevada roads

Hanover - Continental has had its driverless test car licensed for autonomous driving on public roads in the state of Nevada, reports Alisa Priddle of the Detroit Free Press.

The red Nevada license plate has an infinity sign to denote it as a “car of the future”.

“Continental's strategy is clearly focused on making this type of future technology a reality,” said Chairman Elmar Degenhart. “It's clear to us that automated driving will be a key element in the mobility of the future,” he continued, adding that Continental can provide partially automated systems for customers by 2016 and fully automated systems as early as 2020.

The company expects the technology to reduce accidents, congestion and fuel consumption. With driverless cars, it notes, the age and state of the driver do not matter and parking is not an issue when cars drop off their passengers and drive home.
