Milan – Pirelli C & SpA has seen demand for tires incorporating a special silencing technology increase 100% over the course of last year.
Homologations of tires equipped with ‘Pirelli noise cancelling system‘ (PNCS) technology rose from 78 in 2017 to 150 last year, the company reported 22 Jan.
The system is “increasingly requested by the world’s best-known carmakers, especially those in the premium and prestige sectors,” Pirelli said.
The statement did not list end-users of the technology, which has been available in the market since 2013.
Pirelli’s system is designed to reduce “perceived noise” on the inside of the car and is claimed by Pirelli to reduce noise by up to 25%.
To achieve the noise reduction, the tire maker employs “a specific sound-absorbing material” placed within the tire.
The material absorbs vibrations in the air that would otherwise be transmitted to the inside of the vehicle.
The ‘sponge’ is made from foam consisting of open cells that maximise the working surface of the material.
The structure ‘intensifies the deadening of vibration, and therefore reduces noise,’ Pirelli explained.
