VDMA slams Brexit vote as 'irresponsible'

Frankfurt, Germany – German machinery trade association VDMA has described the UK parliament’s rejection of the Brexit deal agreed between the EU and UK prime minister Theresa May as “simply irresponsible.”

In a statement on 16 Jan, VDMA president Carl Martin Welcker said the House of Commons had “missed an opportunity” to avert a hard Brexit and to “lay the foundations for a close relationship with the EU.”

“It is simply irresponsible that the British government coalition is still fighting for a unified position ten weeks before the resignation date,” he added.

With the UK set to exit the European Union on 29 March concern is growing about the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit and its impact on trade.

The parliament rejected Theresa May's agreed deal with the EU on 15 Jan. The prime minister is set to present a new deal to the MPs on 21 Jan.
