Cancarb expands carbon black production capacity

Medicine Hat, Alberta – Cancarb Ltd. will expand its thermal carbon black production capacity with the construction of a sixth unit at its Medicine Hat facility.

The project at the Canadian site will commence by the end of the fourth quarter and is set to be complete in the summer of 2020. The firm said its five current units have a total capacity for 100 million pounds. The sixth will add about 20 million pounds and produce the firm's Thermax-branded medium thermal carbon black.

"We are pleased to make this additional investment in Cancarb's thermal carbon black capacity so as to serve the growing needs of Cancarb's customers," Takashi Masaki, general manager of the Carbon Black Division of Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd., Cancarb's parent company, said in a statement. "This investment reaffirms our commitment to this special grade of carbon black and to the many specialty markets and applications Cancarb serves."

Based in Medicine Hat, Cancarb serves customers in more than 40 countries with its thermal carbon black products. It is a subsidiary of Tokai Carbon, which produces carbon materials within four units—carbon black, graphite electrodes, fine carbon and friction materials.
