Borealis plastomers a “first” for healthcare industry

Vienna – Borealis and Borouge are introducing the “first controlled plastomers solution” for the global healthcare market, the companies* announced 14 Oct.

Plastomer grade Bormed PL8830-PH pushes the envelope when it comes to polyolefins performance characteristics for healthcare applications, a Borealis statement claimed.

The healthcare market, it noted, depends on a secure supply of controlled raw materials that meet "especially demanding" standards of safety, biocompatibility, non-toxicity and other criteria.

With the new grade, Borealis said it “is currently the only raw material supplier to offer a material that can bridge the gap between thermoplastics and elastomers.”

The ethylene-based octene-1 plastomer is said to exhibit “excellent purity and cleanliness” as well as enhanced compatibility with PP, easy processing, clarity, and "flexibility on an elastomers level."

The plastomer has been specifically developed for use as a versatile blend partner along with other polyolefins in film, extrusion, and moulding applications, said the company.

Possible applications, it added, include pharmaceutical packaging: IV bags, API bags, film f*or medical device packaging and bioreactors.
