UPM achieves industrial-scale production at Leuna biorefinery
Production and sales of lignin-based products expected to start by yearend
Helsinki – UPM has achieved industrial-scale production on one of three main process operations at its new biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, the Finnish group has reported.
In the first ‘core’ process – the hydrothermal breakdown of wood into sugar and lignin – “we achieved stability and production levels on an industrial scale,” UPM reported 29 Oct.
Production and sales of the first commercial products, industrial sugars and lignin-based products are expected to start by the end of the year, it stated.
Glycol production and sales is on track for the first half of 2026, according to the update, included in the group’s third quarter interim report.
