Leverkusen, Germany – Momentive Performance Materials Inc. broke ground on its new silane manufacturing facility in Leverkusen on 26 Jan.
The firm said in a news release the new site will serve the automotive industry with its NXT-brand of silane products, targeting the European market. It is Momentive's second facility in Leverkusen and joins a network of 24 manufacturing sites worldwide.
The site is expected to begin production in 2017 with a $30 million (€28 million) investment to add manufacturing capacity.
"Building new capacity in Leverkusen is well aligned with our targeted growth plans in the global automotive industry and is a key component of our ability to offer a comprehensive portfolio of speciality products," President and CEO Jack Boss said in a statement.
"The Leverkusen site will make locally-produced NXT Silane material available in Europe for the first time. The strategic location, proximity to key customers, and a dedicated workforce make Leverkusen the ideal choice."
Its NXT line of products are used by tire makers seeking to enhance low rolling resistance while preserving wet traction. Momentive added that the products can help improve tire performance while being easily integrated into the manufacturer's existing production methods.
Previously, the product was only produced in the US and exported to Europe. But this new site combined with the recent acquisition of Sea Lion Technology Inc. will help improve NXT's availability around the world.
Momentive is a global silicones and advanced materials manufacturer, headquartered in Waterford, New York.
