London - Fitness is not just a 21st century craze. This piece of short news published in October 1889 shows Mr Lovatt of Manchester inventing a version of the modern-day punch ball, calling it “Lovatt’s automatical physical trainer”.
Solely manufactured by Messers. David Mosely & Sons, the ‘trainer’ is promoted to work for “developing muscles of the legs, arms and body”. The piece suggests that this kit is needed for “mastering the problem of how to box” without having “blackened eyes or sanguinary noses”.
