Scrap tires wash ashore on Scottish beach
ERJ staff report (BC)
Edinburgh, Scotland - Residents at Wardie Bay, Granton, near Edinburgh, were surprised to find more than two hundred tires washed ashore on the beach near their homes just before Christmas, reports Greener Leith.
After a few residents pitched in to gather the tires together at the top of the beach, speculation has begun as to their source.
Some of them are apparently covered in barnacles, indicating that they may have been in the sea for some time, while others have no such covering.
Illegal dumping is the favoured explanation. The small beach next to Granton Harbour is understood to belong to the UK Crown Estate. Local council environmental wardens have been to the site to investigate.
