North America tyre sales up further in July - Michelin
ERJ staff report (LMH)
Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world were poor in July, with tyre sales suffering in most areas, except for North America, which saw reasonable increases in both original equipment and replacement markets.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for July 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand was down slightly, by 1 percent in June, and by 2 percent in the year-to-date. On the replacement side, June 2012 saw a decline of 11 percent compared to the same month a year ago, while the year-to-date decline was 23 percent.
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, though slowly. Growth in July was 13 percent, while the year-to-date was slightly higher at 17 percent.. Replacement sales were up by 2 percent in July but down by 4 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by a considerable 30 percent in the month of July and fell by even more (33 percent) in the first seven months. The decline in replacement sales was a sharp 10 percent in July, and a decrease of 5 percent in the year-to-date.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were weak in both Europe and Brazil. Though the OE market was up by 4 percent in July, the total decrease for the year was 3 percent. On the replacement side, sales in July declined by 6 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 10 percent in the first six months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by a huge 26 percent in July, boosting the six-month growth to 22 percent.
